How to Hire an HVAC Contractor in Arizona
Most people hire an HVAC company in a hurry, usually when the house is already hot. A few minutes of checking up front can save a lot of money and frustration. Here is what to look for in the East Valley.
1. Check the license
HVAC contractors in Arizona are licensed by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC). You can look up any contractor’s license, its status and any complaints at roc.az.gov. Ask for the ROC number and check it before work starts.
2. Get the diagnosis in writing
For a repair, you should know what failed, what the fix is and what it costs before any work begins. If the recommendation is a new system, ask why the current one can’t be repaired.
3. Make sure a new system is sized for your home
An AC that’s too big cycles on and off and leaves the house clammy. One that’s too small runs all afternoon and still can’t keep up. A proper quote is based on your home’s size, layout, insulation, windows and ductwork, not just the size of the old unit.
4. Compare quotes line by line
Two quotes for “a new AC” can be very different jobs. Compare the equipment model and efficiency rating (SEER2), what happens to the old unit, whether ductwork, thermostat and electrical work are included, permits, and the labor warranty.
5. Ask about warranties
Manufacturer warranties cover parts and usually require registration and regular maintenance. The contractor’s workmanship warranty covers the installation. Get both in writing.
6. Read recent reviews
Look at recent Google reviews, not just the star rating. Reviews that describe the problem, how it was explained and how the crew left the house tell you more than a row of stars.
7. Watch for pressure
Be careful with “today only” pricing, a replacement pitch before anyone has diagnosed the system, or a quote that won’t itemize. A good contractor is comfortable with you taking a day to decide.
