A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of your home; in winter it pulls heat in from outside. Arizona’s mild winters make heat pumps a common choice here, and many East Valley homes use one in place of a gas furnace.
Signs your heat pump needs service
- It cools but won’t heat, or heats but won’t cool
- The outdoor unit runs constantly or short-cycles
- Ice on the outdoor coil that doesn’t clear
- Loud grinding, buzzing or clicking
- Higher electric bills with no change in use
Repair or replace
Many heat pump problems are a failed capacitor, contactor, reversing valve or defrost control, and those can be repaired. If the compressor has failed on an older system, or the unit uses R-22 refrigerant, replacement is usually the better value. We price both and explain the difference.
Because a heat pump runs year-round here, a maintenance visit each spring and fall keeps it efficient and catches small problems early.
