How Long Does an Air Conditioner Last in Arizona?

Air conditioners in the Phoenix area work harder than almost anywhere else in the country. That shortens their life, and it’s why the age of your system matters more here than it would in a milder climate.

The short answer

In the East Valley, most central air conditioners and heat pumps last somewhere around 10 to 15 years. Some go longer with good maintenance and a shaded, clean outdoor unit. Some fail sooner, usually because they were undersized, installed poorly or rarely serviced.

Why Arizona is hard on AC systems

  • Run time. Systems here run most of the year and for long stretches on summer afternoons. More hours means more wear on the compressor, fan motors and electrical parts.
  • Heat on the outdoor unit. The condenser has to dump heat into air that is already well over 100°F, which makes every part of the system work harder.
  • Dust and monsoon storms. Dust clogs outdoor coils and indoor filters, and power surges from summer storms can damage control boards.
  • Attic ductwork. Ducts in hot attics lose cooling through leaks, so the system runs longer to keep up.

Signs your system is near the end

  • It needs a repair every summer
  • It runs constantly and still can’t hold the temperature on hot afternoons
  • Your electric bills are climbing with no change in how you use it
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant (common in systems installed before about 2010)
  • The compressor or a coil has failed on a system more than 10 years old

How to get more years out of it

  • Have it serviced before every summer, and check the heating side before winter if it’s a heat pump
  • Change the filter every one to three months, more often during monsoon season
  • Keep two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit and rinse the coil gently after dust storms
  • Have leaky ducts sealed so the system doesn’t run longer than it needs to
  • Fix small problems, like a weak capacitor, before they take out a bigger part

If your system is getting up there in years, we can look it over and give you a straight answer on whether to keep maintaining it or start planning a replacement.
